Transparency and resident engagement are two important pillars of South Salt Lake's government; as a result, we strive to create a clear and intuitive election process and encourage all our residents to participate!
How it Works
South Salt Lake elections are conducted by Salt Lake County Elections Division. Ballots include candidates for all levels of government and all positions that are holding an election. Information on how to vote and election results can be found on their website.
The City of South Salt Lake will hold a Municipal General Election on November 2, 2021 to elect the following:
- Mayor
- City Council District 2
- City Council District 3
- At-Large Representative 1
These positions are four year terms.
To qualify as a candidate a person must be:
- A United States citizen at the time of filing
- A legal resident of South Salt Lake for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election
- A registered voter of the municipality
- A resident of the council district you are filing for
- Not be a convicted felon unless the right to hold elective office has been restored
- Pay the $25 filing fee
The City Council has elected to use the Ranked Choice Voting method without a Primary Election.
The candidate filing period is Tuesday, August 10, 2021 through Tuesday, August 17, 2021, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The candidate filing deadline is Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.
Declaration of Candidacy forms or Nomination Petitions must be filed in person with the City Recorder’s Office at 220 East Morris Avenue, Suite 200, South Salt Lake, Utah, unless individuals are subject to Section 20A-9-203(3)(b) of the Utah Code. Declaration of Candidacy form

Early Voting
In-office voting is offered at the Salt Lake County Election Division, 2001 S. State St., October 19 through October 29 (weekdays only) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Voting Centers on Election Day
There will be one Voting Center in South Salt Lake on Election Day: the Columbus Center, 2531 South 400 East. Residents of South Salt Lake can go to any Vote Center in Salt Lake County to cast their ballot. For a complete list of the Vote Centers click HERE.
Election day results can be viewed starting at 8:00 p.m. on the Salt Lake County Elections Division website.
Vote by Mail
All South Salt Lake elections have a vote-by-mail option. Every eligible, active voter will be mailed a ballot at least three weeks prior to Election Day (an active voter is a voter that has voted at least once in the last four years).
Ballots are not forwarded. However, if a ballot is returned as "undeliverable" with a forwarding address within Salt Lake County, the Salt Lake County Clerk's Election Division will spoil the returned ballot, update the address, and send a new ballot for their new precinct.
The Salt Lake County Election Division will mail ballots weekly to newly registered voters or to those voters who have moved and updated their address. Ballots will be mailed daily the week prior to Election Day.
