- Low Water Grass Seed
South Salt Lake Water customers are now eligible to purchase a low water grass seed from the City designed to conserve water and save money.
This mix/blend of grasses is particularly well suited to grow right here along the Wasatch Front. It’s a cool-season blend of tall fescue and a little bit of bluegrass, and it needs 30% less water than the typical Bluegrass lawn.
The typical Kentucky Bluegrass lawn requires between 24 to 30 inches of water during the growing season. This seed mix requires 30% less, or 15 to 19 inches of water per season. And if you reduce your lawn area by a bit when you re-seed, imagine how much water you can save!
Spring and fall are the best seasons to establish your new low water lawn. Watch these videos from Utah State University Extension for installation tutorials.
- An introduction to your new low water grass seed.
- Installing the right irrigation, the right way. High efficiency nozzles, drip, tree zones, the works.
- Prepare for seeding. You need to kill your existing grass for the best coverage. Distribute the seed evenly over the application area.
- Water for germination. This is really important. It only takes a few minutes, twice a day. No longer or the seed will rot.
- Mulch. Highly recommended to use mulch or straw to keep the seed bed moist and ensure germination success.
- Establishment watering. With the right tools, plants, and know-how you make every drop count.
