The city established a Traffic Safety Committee to review and address all traffic safety complaints received from the public. The committee is comprised of staff members from various city departments, including Engineering, Public Works, Police, and Neighborhoods. The group meets regularly to discuss and address traffic related issues and public concerns, and take action when necessary.

Traffic Calming Program

In response to public concerns and feedback about speeding problems in our neighborhoods, and requests to implement traffic calming devices or other speed reduction programs, the South Salt Lake Traffic Safety Committee has implemented a new Traffic Calming Program. The approach is an equitable process to review and prioritize our neighborhood streets most in need of traffic calming devices, including a combination of physical measures on roads to reduce car speeds. Public safety is our top priority, and on-going community input is essential to ensuring this program creates safer and more enjoyable neighborhoods for all residents.

Before a traffic calming feature will be considered, certain qualifying requirements must be met.

  1. Non-physical measures must be tried first before a physical traffic calming feature is installed.
  2. Must be classified as a local road or street.
  3. Total number of units in the neighborhood or subdivision must be at least 50% occupied.
  4. A traffic safety study is conducted and scores a minimum of 40 points.
  5. Available funding exists for construction/installation.
