Candidate Qualifications

• Must be a registered voter in South Salt Lake.
• A legal resident of South Salt Lake for 12 consecutive months immediately before the date of the election.
• Maintain a principal place of residence within South Salt Lake, and within the district that the candidate desires to represent during the term of the office. 
• Pay the $25 filing fee.
• In accordance with Utah Constitution Article IV, Section 6, any mentally incompetent person, any person convicted of a felony, or any person convicted of treason or a crime against the elective franchise may not hold office in this state until the right to hold elective office is restored.

Declaration of Candidacy

Declaration of Candidacy forms or Nomination Petitions must be filed in person with the City Recorder’s Office at 220 East Morris Avenue, Suite 200, South Salt Lake, Utah, unless individuals are subject to Section 20A-9-203(3)(b) of the Utah Code.

How to File

1. Complete the Declaration of Candidacy form (in person with the City Recorder or via approved remote filing if you are out of state during the filing period). *
2. Submit a Conflict of Interest Disclosure (Utah Code § 10-3-301.5)
3. Pay the $25 filing fee
4. File in person with the City Recorder: South Salt Lake City Hall Suite 220, 220 East Morris Ave., South Salt Lake, UT 84115 Mon-Fri, 8AM-5PM, August 12-19, 2025.

*If you are outside Utah for the entire filing period, you may authorize a single agent and complete filing over live video per Utah Code §20A-9-203

After You File

• Candidate names will be posted on the City's Website within 3 business days.
• Campaign Finance reports will be due as indicated in the Candidate Guide. (Candidate Guide will be given to the candidate at the time of filing).
• Master Ballot Position determined by statewide random alphabet.

During each municipal election, the South Salt Lake City Council votes on whether or not to use the Ranked Choice Voting method without a Primary Election.  On February 26th, 2025 the City Council voted to use Ranked Choice Voting the the 2025 Municipal Election. 

What is Ranked Choice Voting (RCV)?

RCV is where a voter ranks candidates according to preference (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.). If a candidate receives a majority of the first-choice votes, that candidate is elected. If no candidate receives a majority of the first-choice votes the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated and transferred to the voter's second choice of the remaining candidates. This process continues until a candidate wins with an absolute majority (50%+) of the votes. Voters do not have to rank a candidate and still have the option to only vote for one candidate if they desire.

• Access voting and candidate information on the Vote Utah website.
• Visit the Salt Lake County Clerk's Election website to check your voter registration status, find nearby voting centers and ballot drop box locations, track election results, and find other election information.
• Military and overseas voters may complete the Federal Postcard Application, which can be accessed by visiting the Federal Voting Assistant Program website.
