ADUs

As of February 7, 2024, South Salt Lake allows Internal and External Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) in the R1 and RM land use districts. To see if you qualify to have an Internal or External ADU, review the SSL ADU Handbook. If you want to verify your zoning please use the Interactive Zoning Map. The full ADU Ordinance can be found here. If you have any questions regarding the general requirements, please call 801-483-6063 ext. 5 or email planning@sslc.gov.

South Salt Lake uses the ADU Predevelopment Application process to ensure your ADU plans meet City requirements, so that it is properly located, designed, safely constructed, and compatible with your neighborhood. The ADU Predevelopment Application must be received and processed by the Planning Department before a building permit may be processed.

Please review the SSL ADU Handbook before submitting the ADU Predevelopment Application. Complete ADU Predevelopment applications are currently accepted in-person or via email at planning@sslc.gov. The ADU Predevelopment Application fee is $50.00.

Please be aware that a separate building permit is required for any structural change, remodel, or new construction in your home. However, the ADU Predevelopment application must be received and approved by the Planning Department before a building permit or business license may be processed by the department.

Why Build an ADU?

Building an ADU or converting existing space into one can be a smart investment for many property owners:

  • Increase property value
  • House friends and family
  • Generate rental income
  • Add housing stock

General Rules for All ADUs

If you are thinking about adding an ADU to your property, make sure you review these key details.

  • Must be compliant with building, health, and fire codes.
  • 30 day or longer rental periods required (short-term rentals are not permitted in single family zones).
  • A permit and annual license are required if an ADU is being rented.
  • The owner, or an immediate family member (spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild) of the owner, is required to live in either the primary unit or the accessory unit.
  • One additional parking site is required. Additional spaces are required according to bedroom count for additions/attached ADUs and external ADUs.
  • Adding a second driveway for ADU access requires a circular driveway connection with a 35-foot separation between entrances.
  • No new address is created, only Unit B is added to the existing address.
  • Second/separate utility meters cannot be added for the ADU.
  • Egress windows must be added for existing and new construction.
