My Pet is Lost

Contact SSL Animal Services at 801-483-6024 as soon as you are aware that your pet is missing. We need a detailed description of your pet and the location that it is missing from. We also need the information necessary to contact you should we locate your pet.

Contact local veterinarian offices, as well as the Animal Control agencies and shelters in surrounding areas (a list of all the Salt Lake valley animal shelters and agencies is available online at www.utahhumane.org).

Lost pets are sometimes picked up by concerned people and they may not be turned in to the correct animal shelter or agency. It is a good idea to visit the animal shelters in person as you know your pet better than anyone. Alert your neighbors to be on the lookout for your lost pet and post on apps such as Nextdoor and the Utah Lost and Found Pets group page on Facebook. 

Do not post flyers on City property or private property, it is against City ordinance and you could be cited.

Please make sure that all dogs  and cats (even indoor pets) have a current city pet license and a rabies vaccination tag. Not only is it the law, but it helps us keep your information on file should someone ever return your pet to SSL Animal Services.

One of the best forms of permanent identification for your pet is a MICROCHIP. SSL Animal Services offers microchips for $50.00. Please call the shelter at 801-483-6024 to get more information about microchipping your pet. We scan every animal that we get into the shelter for a microchip and in some instances the pet can be returned to the owner the same day.

DO NOT GIVE UP LOOKING. We have seen pets reunited with their owners years after they were lost because of a microchip. Please remember that a microchip and ID collar could make all the difference on being reunited with your lost pet.

I Found a Lost Pet

Contact SSL Animal Services at 801-483-6024 if you see a lost or stray animal. The owner may be out searching for that animal. Lost or stray pets are often confused and scared. They are in danger of being injured or hit by a car. If you find a lost pet please bring the animal into the shelter and advise us where the animal was found. This gives the owner the best possible chance of being reunited with their pet. When you turn in a lost animal, you are given the first opportunity to adopt the animal if the owner does not claim it.

All dogs, cats, and ferrets residing in South Salt Lake are required by law to have a current rabies vaccination and a current City license issues by the City of South Salt Lake. In order to obtain a pet license, you must have a current rabies vaccination certificate. Pet owners must obtain a pet license within thirty (30) days after the animal reaches the age of six months or, in the case of an animal over six months, within ten (10) days of acquiring the animal.

Volunteer With SSL Animal Services

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with South Salt Lake Animal Services! Shelters can be a stressful place for animals. Kind, dedicated volunteers make a big difference in the lives of animals during their stay at the shelter. Volunteer opportunities include playing, walking, cleaning up, feeding, and photographing animals.
